Man arrested with 1.7 tonnes of marijuana hidden in truck on BR-153 in Ourinhos
A truck driver was arrested in Brazil after 1.7 tonnes of marijuana was discovered hidden among food supplies during a routine police inspection.
The Federal Highway Police (PRF) in Brazil intercepted a truck carrying 1.7 tonnes of marijuana on Friday morning at kilometer 347 of BR-153 in Ourinhos, São Paulo. The illicit cargo was cleverly disguised among bales of food products intended for delivery in Rio de Janeiro. The operation highlighted ongoing challenges in the regional drug trade, as traffickers continue to devise methods to transport illegal substances without detection.
During a routine patrol, officers stopped the truck and noticed the driver, a 36-year-old man, appeared unusually nervous when asked about the cargo. Although he initially provided documentation for a legitimate food shipment, the police decided to conduct a thorough inspection of the truck’s cargo area. Upon inspection, the distinct smell of marijuana prompted officers to investigate further, leading to the discovery of the hidden drugs among the bales.
The driver eventually confessed to the smuggling operation, revealing that the marijuana had originated from Londrina, Paraná. The successful seizure of 1,718 kilograms of marijuana underscores the effectiveness of the police's operational strategies, as well as the persistent issue of drug trafficking in Brazil, which poses significant social and security challenges for the country.
