Couple with child arrested in PR during seizure of the largest amount of marijuana of the year on federal highways

A couple was arrested in Brazil with over 5 tons of marijuana hidden in a truck carrying corn, marking the largest drug seizure on federal highways in 2026.

On Tuesday morning, a 33-year-old man and his 29-year-old partner were arrested by the Federal Highway Police (PRF) in Paraná, Brazil, after authorities uncovered over 5 tons of marijuana hidden among a shipment of corn. Notably, the couple's 9-year-old stepchild was present in the truck during the drug bust. This operation resulted in the largest drug seizure reported on federal highways in Brazil for the year 2026, highlighting ongoing issues related to drug trafficking in the region.

During the inspection of the cargo, the PRF officers discovered various bales of drugs concealed beneath the legitimate freight of corn. The total seizure included 5,401 kilograms of marijuana, along with 21.1 kilograms of hashish and 3.6 kilograms of capulho, a part of the cannabis plant. Following the official weighing and processing, the couple was taken to the police station in Cascavel, a city in western Paraná, with the confiscated drugs.

While the man was detained, authorities decided to release the woman and the child at the police station, raising questions about the welfare of minors in situations linked to drug trafficking. This case underscores not only the challenges faced by law enforcement in combating drug-related crimes but also the broader social issues surrounding families involved in drug trade activities, particularly with children caught in such circumstances.
