Smuggling of African gold by train, two smugglers arrested with 2 kilograms of gold

Two smugglers were arrested in Varanasi, India, for attempting to smuggle African gold worth over three and a half crores.

In a significant bust at the Cantt Railway Station in Varanasi, the joint team of the GRP and RPF apprehended two smugglers who were transporting approximately 2.215 kilograms of African gold, valued at around 3.54 crore rupees. The operation took place during a routine checking drive when authorities received a tip-off about two suspicious individuals arriving on the Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express. Upon noticing the police, the suspects attempted to flee but were swiftly detained by the officers on duty.

The arrested individuals were identified as Balaso Jadhav, aged 36, from Satara, and Tejas Pawar, aged 23, from Pune, Maharashtra. The police discovered gold bars concealed in their clothing, leading to a thorough investigation into their operation. The seizure highlights a growing concern over smuggling activities in India, particularly of precious metals like gold, which is often trafficked across borders due to high international market values.

This incident not only underscores the effectiveness of coordinated law enforcement efforts in controlling smuggling but also raises questions about the broader implications of such illegal activities on local markets and businesses. Authorities are likely to enhance surveillance and checks at transportation hubs to prevent future smuggling attempts, especially as global demand for gold remains high and illicit trade continues to be a pressing issue for the region and the country as a whole.
