Application chaos as 175,000 seek jobs in the EU

A record number of 175,000 applicants, particularly from Italy, have inundated the EU with job applications following the reopening of recruitment for EU institutions.

The EU's recruitment authority, EPSO, anticipated around 60,000 applicants when it reopened the EU recruitment list for the first time in several years. However, the response surpassed expectations by a significant margin with 174,922 applications submitted for just 1,490 available positions. This influx signals a strong demand for employment opportunities within the EU's institutional framework, reflecting broader economic conditions and the appeal of EU positions.

Italy led the charge with nearly 80,000 applications, highlighting a particularly intense interest in EU roles by Italian candidates. Following Italy, Spain contributed around 13,000 applications, with more modest numbers from Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. The high volume of applications suggests a competitive environment not just for EU jobs but also highlights the challenges faced by job seekers in these countries, engaging particularly in younger demographics affected by higher unemployment rates.

After a series of assessments and tests, EPSO expects to ultimately offer permanent positions to about 750 candidates from this large cohort. This initiative, which aims to bring fresh talent into the EU institutions, underscores the importance of EU employment as a potential solution to regional job shortages and reflects the ongoing shifts in labor market dynamics across Europe.
