No illegal migrants recorded on the border with Belarus

No illegal migrants were recorded crossing the border from Belarus to Lithuania, with neighboring countries also reporting low numbers of migrant attempts.

Lithuanian border authorities reported that no illegal migrants were attempting to cross the border with Belarus in recent days, marking a notable decrease in crossings. On the same day, Latvian border officials confirmed that they too had not turned back any migrants. Conversely, Polish authorities indicated that one person was turned away the previous day for attempting to unlawfully enter the country from Belarus. This trend reflects a significant drop in attempts, contrasting sharply with previous years where hundreds to thousands of attempts were recorded annually.

In total, Lithuania has turned away 37 illegal migrants this year alone. The last instances of attempted unlawful border crossing into Lithuania occurred on February 26, when two migrants were denied entry. These statistics illustrate a stark difference from last year, where more than 1,600 attempts were documented and earlier data from two years ago revealed over 1,000 attempts, suggesting a broader regional issue surrounding migration from Belarus.

The surge in migration from Belarus to eastern EU member states began in 2021, which Western nations accused the Minsk regime of orchestrating as a response to political tensions. This situation has led to ongoing international disputes and heightened security measures along the borders, particularly with nations such as Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland aiming to control their borders amidst fears of increased migrant flows motivated by political instability.
