Catarama River overflows in Los Ríos and causes flooding
Heavy rains have caused the Catarama River in Ecuador to overflow, leading to significant flooding in the local parish.
The province of Los Ríos in Ecuador has been experiencing heavy rainfall, which has resulted in the overflow of the Catarama River, particularly affecting the parish of the same name. On March 9th, the river's swelling waters inundated several neighborhoods in the town, leading emergency services and the fire department to clear debris and manage the consequences.
In response to the flooding, authorities reported that the overflow was exacerbated by rainfall in nearby cantons, which contributed to debris accumulation at the pedestrian bridge connecting Catarama with Ricaurte. In light of the risks involved, the pedestrian bridge has been temporarily closed, forcing local residents to make use of a nearby vehicular bridge for their movements.
The National Government is actively coordinating efforts to address the emergencies caused by the flooding and to ensure public safety. This situation underscores the vulnerabilities that local communities face due to extreme weather conditions and the importance of swift governmental response in disaster management.
