The Film That Achieved 12 Million Viewers After My Departure... 'The King’s Affection' Held for 8 Years

The film 'The King’s Affection' reached 12 million viewers, showcasing the successful journey of its producer, Lim Eun-jung, who established her own company after facing uncertainty in the industry.

'The King’s Affection' was a long-term project for producer Lim Eun-jung, who faced skepticism about her new company’s viability in the crowded film market as she prepared for the film's release. A week into its launch, the film hit the pivotal 1 million viewers mark which shifted expectations towards reaching the break-even point of 2.6 million. This milestone enhanced Lim’s confidence after originally facing pressures regarding her decision to produce this film amidst many challenges in movie investment for 2023.

Lim had dreamed of this project since her time at CJ ENM eight years prior, where she laid down the groundwork for this narrative, initially developing it alongside two other projects. Although one of those projects was released in 2021, the current film, inspired by historical character Eom Heung-do, was shelved for many years due to industry constraints. Despite past setbacks and feeling uncertain about achieving her goals, Lim’s passion and belief in her project led her to commit to producing the film after leaving her previous position.

The turning point came during the script’s development with writer Hwang Seong-gu, especially after modern themes were integrated that mirrored desires for revitalization akin to major global events. References to the Jeju Chusa Museum and how the revival of historical figures could benefit communities paved the way for a compelling narrative that resonated with contemporary viewers. As the film continues to break records in the South Korean box office, it stands as a testament not only to Lim’s resilience but also to the evolving landscape of the Korean film industry.
