‘The Man Living with the King’ Breaks 10 Million... 34th Among Released Films
The historical drama 'The Man Living with the King' has surpassed 10 million viewers, marking it as the 34th film in history to achieve this milestone in South Korea.
Directed by Jang Hang-jun and starring Yoo Hae-jin and Park Ji-hoon, the historical drama 'The Man Living with the King' has recently surpassed 10 million viewers at the box office, achieving this milestone on the 31st day since its release. According to distributor Showbox, it has become the 34th film in South Korea's history to reach this milestone, and the 25th among Korean films. The story centers on the tragic life of King Danjong, who was murdered at the age of 17 by his uncle Sejo, focusing on the historical figure Eom Heung-do, who is known for handling Danjong’s funeral in his exiled location, Yeongwol, Gangwon-do.
The film's success can be attributed largely to positive word-of-mouth, as it initially had disappointing pre-release ticket sales and opening week performance. However, it began to gain traction during the Lunar New Year holiday, attracting family audiences and eventually reaching a peak daily attendance of 810,000 on the holiday of March 1st in its fourth week, a rarity for films to achieve peak attendance this late after release. Consequently, this has sparked a significant cultural phenomenon, including increased book sales related to the film and a surge in visitors to Yeongwol, where the movie is set.
The achievement of reaching 10 million viewers is notable as it occurs two years after the release of 'The Outlaws 4' in April 2024. Additionally, 'The Man Living with the King' is only the fourth historical drama film to reach this viewer milestone, following 'The King’s Man' (2005), 'Gwanghae, The Man Who Became King' (2012), and 'Myeongryang' (2014).
