Snow and Rain Expected in Eastern Region from 12th to 13th — Heavy Snow of Up to 20cm in Gangwon Mountains

Eastern regions of Korea are forecasted to experience snow or rain from December 12th to 13th, with the Gangwon mountains receiving significant snowfall.

Korea's meteorological authorities have forecasted substantial snow and rain in eastern regions, particularly in the mountainous areas of Gangwon Province, where snowfall could reach up to 20cm from December 12th to 13th. The cold northeast winds, influenced by a passing movable high-pressure system, will carry moisture across the East Sea, leading to precipitation mainly in eastern localities, while inland areas might witness lesser accumulations. Meteorologist Kang Hye-mi warned of the potential for thunderstorms and hail-like precipitation in some regions due to increased atmospheric instability inland.

The expected snowfall in the Gangwon mountains ranges from 5cm to 15cm, but some areas might exceed 20cm. Other regions, such as the eastern coastline of Gangwon, Ulleungdo, and Dokdo, are also expected to see varying amounts of precipitation. Rainfall predictions suggest 5-20mm in the eastern coast and mountainous regions, while other areas, including parts of Busan, Ulsan, and Daegu, could receive lesser amounts. The meteorological agency has indicated that on the following Sunday and Monday, weak rain or snow might occur, but these forecasts remain uncertain.

As temperatures are expected to stay around average with significant daily fluctuations, daytime warmth can unexpectedly contrast with rapid cooling by night due to radiation cooling. This temperature variation poses risks, particularly for early spring crops, as frost may form inland areas from December 12th and throughout the 13th and 14th, necessitating vigilance among farmers for crop management during this transitional weather period.
