Heavy Snow Expected in Gangwon Province, More to Come... Rain or Snow Nationwide Today and Tomorrow

Weather forecasts predict significant snowfall in Gangwon Province, with nationwide rain and snow extending from the afternoon of the 5th.

Beginning on the afternoon of the 5th, coinciding with 'Gyeongchip', the day frogs wake from winter hibernation, rain is expected to start falling in the western part of the Korean Peninsula before spreading across the country. Gangwon Province, which has already experienced heavy snowfall, is forecasted to receive significant amounts, potentially reaching 'heavy snow warning' levels. Citizens are advised to take extra precautions regarding safety and facility management in anticipation of the weather conditions. Meteorologist Gong Sang-min explained during a regular forecast briefing that a low-pressure system is developing between the cold continental high-pressure area in the northwest and warm high-pressure area in the south, leading to rain or snow for the 5th and 6th. Southern areas of the country and Jeju Island are expected to receive mostly rain, whereas central inland regions and mountainous areas may see mixed rain and snow. Accumulations of snow in areas like northern inland Gangwon could reach anywhere from 5 to over 15 centimeters, prompting concerns about safety incidents and mishandling of snow-covered facilities. As the weekend approaches, a high-pressure system will likely bring clearer skies across the nation, although a notable chill from the north may induce temperatures lower than the seasonal average. Forecasts indicate lows of -2 to -7 degrees Celsius and highs reaching up to 14 degrees, suggesting a chilly weekend ahead. However, temperatures are projected to rebound to usual averages by the following week, with morning temperatures ranging from -5 to 7 degrees Celsius and daytime highs between 7 to 15 degrees as the week progresses.
