Chilly Morning Commute Below Freezing... Up to 15cm of Snow in Gangwon Mountains
Snow and rain are expected in Korea's eastern region and southern provinces, while temperatures drop below freezing for morning commutes.
On Thursday, December 12, snow and rain are forecasted primarily in the eastern coastal and mountainous areas of Gangwon Province, as well as in parts of the southern regions of Korea. The Korea Meteorological Administration has stated that precipitation will occur from the morning until the afternoon of December 13, affecting areas like the eastern coast and mountains of Gangwon, the eastern coastal region of North Gyeongsang Province, and the eastern inland of Busan, Ulsan, and South Gyeongsang Province. The anticipated rainfall and snowfall amounts are significant, especially in Gangwon's mountainous regions where snow accumulation of up to 15 cm is possible, potentially leading to disruptions due to heavy, wet snow.
The morning temperatures on December 12 are predicted to be chilly, ranging from -2 to 5 degrees Celsius, with daytime highs expected to reach between 7 to 14 degrees Celsius. This temperature range aligns closely with the seasonal averages for December. Major cities such as Seoul, Incheon, and Daejeon will experience values around zero degrees in the morning, with higher temperatures by the afternoon nearing the mid-teens. The Korea Meteorological Administration also indicated that the temperature differences between day and night could peak at around 15 degrees Celsius in inland areas in the days following December 12.
Additionally, air quality is a concern with fine dust levels expected to be 'bad' in certain regions including Seoul, Incheon, and southern Gyeonggi Province. Although the current weather might cause some inconvenience, residents are advised to pay particular attention to weather warnings regarding significant snowfall in Gangwon Province, ensuring that they prepare adequately for potentially hazardous conditions during their morning commutes and beyond.
