Piauí Government invests R$ 34 million in the maintenance and safety of dams
The Piauí Government has invested R$ 34 million in the maintenance, recovery, monitoring, and technical studies of state-managed dams from 2023 to February 2026.
The Government of Piauí has allocated R$ 34 million for the maintenance and security of dams in the state from 2023 until February 2026. This investment is managed through the Institute of Development of Piauí (Idepi), in collaboration with the Civil Defense Secretariat (Sedec) and the Secretariat of Environment and Water Resources (Semarh). The initiative aims to enhance the safety of hydraulic structures and mitigate risks to the population living near these dams.
Of the total amount, over R$ 7.3 million will be dedicated to general maintenance of various dams, while R$ 13.9 million specifically targets the recovery of the Pedra Redonda Dam, located in Conceição do Canindé. Additionally, funds have been allocated for monitoring efforts at the Corredores Dam and designing safety plans for other dam facilities, which include emergency action plans tailored to specific structures like the Algodões II Dam.
This investment underscores the state government's commitment to infrastructure safety and disaster prevention. By prioritizing the maintenance and systematic monitoring of dams, officials aim to protect communities from potential hazards posed by dam failures or natural disasters. This move could serve as a model for other Brazilian states grappling with similar challenges in maintaining their water resources and ensuring public safety.
