'Even if hidden abroad, I won't let go...' CJI speaks on NCERT controversy
The Supreme Court of India adopted a strong stance today regarding changes in NCERT textbooks, warning those who comment indecently about the judiciary on social media and expressing disappointment over the lack of legal expertise in the committee that authored a chapter.
The Supreme Court of India has taken a firm position regarding the controversy surrounding changes to NCERT textbooks, particularly criticizing the absence of qualified legal experts in the committee responsible for writing chapters about the judiciary. Today, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) issued stern warnings to individuals making derogatory comments about the judiciary on social media, stating that the law will take its course, emphasizing that even those hiding abroad will not be let off easily.
The court expressed deep dissatisfaction with Chapter 4 of the 8th-grade textbooks, which pertains to the judiciary, pointing out that none of the committee members were recognized legal experts. This reflects a significant gap in the representation of qualified voices in educational content that discusses critical governmental functions, such as the role of the judiciary, which is essential in shaping young minds in understanding their legal system.
In response to these concerns, the Supreme Court directed the Government of India to establish an expert committee within a week to review and ensure quality input regarding the information presented in this chapter. The court emphasized that any revised content must receive expert approval before publication, highlighting the importance of academic integrity in educating students on pivotal aspects of governance such as judicial processes and their implications.
