Luminor's Chief Economist on Data Center: This is a Significant Investment
Sunly plans to invest nearly two billion euros in a proposed data center in Läänemere, which Luminor's chief economist, Lenno Uusküla, describes as a significant investment for Estonia that should positively impact local life.
Sunly is set to invest approximately two billion euros in a data center planned for Läänemere, which Luminor’s chief economist, Lenno Uusküla, has labeled a remarkable investment within the Estonian context. He emphasizes that this significant financial commitment is notable given Estonia’s gross domestic product of around forty billion euros, highlighting that 1.7 billion euros represent a considerable percentage of the national economy.
Uusküla raises concerns about whether the energy infrastructure can support such a large project, questioning whether the current electricity consumption levels can be accommodated. He points out that the data center would require around 80 megawatts of power, which constitutes a significant portion of Estonia’s total consumption, leading to potential increases in energy prices if the demand surges.
Additionally, the project is planned to be developed over several years, implying a structured approach to ensure sustainability and consideration for future demands. The investment is expected to positively affect local life, possibly bringing job opportunities and an economic boost, while also highlighting the need for strategic discussions about energy supply and consumption patterns as Estonia moves forward with this ambitious project.
