Mihkels started his second highest category stage race of the season

Madis Mihkels began his second highest category stage race of the season at the Tirreno-Adriatico tour in Italy.

Madis Mihkels, Estonia's top road cyclist, kicked off his second highest category of stage racing this season at the prestigious Tirreno-Adriatico tour in Italy. This event is recognized as one of the highest caliber stage races, and Mihkels represents his team, EF Education - EasyPost, in this competitive setting. The opening stage featured an 11.5-kilometer individual time trial starting and ending in Lido di Camaiore, where local cyclist Flippo Ganna from Ineos Grenadiers showcased an impressive performance. Ganna completed the course in just 12 minutes and nine seconds, averaging a blistering speed of 56.868 km/h, leaving his teammates and competitors trailing behind.

Among the contenders this year, Mexican cyclist Isaac Del Toro from UAE Team Emirates - XRG is considered one of the top favorites, finishing the opening stage in tenth place, but notably 36 seconds behind the stage winner. Mihkels faced a challenging start in the time trial, finishing two minutes and three seconds slower than Ganna, which resulted in him placing 156th out of 167 cyclists in the race. The disparity in times highlighted not only the competitive nature of the event but also the uphill battle Mihkels faces against established talents in this category of racing.

As the stage race progresses, Mihkels will be looking to improve his standings and gain valuable experience from competing in such a high-standard international event. The Tirreno-Adriatico is not only a significant showcase of cycling talent but also an important event on the cycling calendar, impacting the season's overall dynamics and influencing future race placements. Mihkels, representing Estonia, aims to leave his mark in the competition, and subsequent stages will be critical for his ambitions in this prestigious race.
