Natal has the highest increase in the country in basic basket prices in February, points out Dieese
In February, Natal experienced a significant 3.52% rise in the cost of basic food items, the largest increase in Brazil according to Dieese.
According to a report by Dieese, the price of the basic food basket in Natal increased by 3.52% from January to February 2023, making it the highest increase among Brazilian capitals. During the same period, a total of 14 capitals witnessed an increase in the basic basket prices, while 13 saw a decline. The average cost of the basket in Natal reached R$ 616.84, which reflects a 3.30% rise over the past year. Comparatively, it is noteworthy that the cost is lower than February 2025, as it has dropped by 4.89%.
Several cities experienced notable price surges, with Natal leading at 3.52%, followed by João Pessoa (2.03%), Recife (1.98%), Maceió (1.87%), and Aracaju (1.85%). These increases point towards rising food costs affecting families, particularly due to inflationary pressures. Notably, the research indicates to sustain a family of four at the current basket price, a monthly salary of R$ 7,164.94 would be required, which is significantly higher than the current minimum wage of R$ 1,621.00, suggesting a growing gap between income and living costs in Brazil.
The report highlights a 12-product increase in the basic basket prices, with many essential food items seeing sharp rises. Such increases have critical implications for household budgets, challenges for policymakers, and the overall economic climate in Brazil, raising concerns about food security and inflation affecting lower-income families.
