Basic basket in Petrolina registers a decrease of 0.39% in February; see variations
In February, the cost of the basic basket in Petrolina fell by 0.39% compared to January, with varying price changes among different food items.
In February 2026, Petrolina, located in the Sertão region of Pernambuco, saw a slight decline in the overall price of the basic food basket, decreasing by 0.39% from January to a total cost of R$ 604.56. This is based on a study by the Economics Department at the Petrolina College of Applied Sciences and Social Studies (Facape). Despite the overall decrease, there were significant price fluctuations among specific items included in the basket, reflecting the complexities of local agricultural conditions and market dynamics.
Notably, beans experienced the highest price increase, up by 14.06%. This surge is attributed mainly to limited supply due to reduced planting areas compared to 2025 and harvesting challenges posed by rainy weather. Additionally, tomatoes also saw price hikes, which were linked to the end of the summer harvest and diminished availability of high-quality tomatoes due to adverse weather conditions affecting crops.
Conversely, several food items showed a decrease in prices, illustrating a mixed economic environment for consumers. The varied price trends demonstrate the ongoing challenges within the local agricultural sector and the impact of climatic conditions on food supply, which are critical for the inhabitants of Petrolina, a city that relies significantly on agriculture and food production for its economy and community health.
