Port of Santos extends discount on tariffs for 'green ships'; understand

The Port of Santos has extended its discount on tariffs for 'green ships' by 120 days to encourage environmentally friendly practices in maritime transport.

The Port of Santos, located in São Paulo, Brazil, has announced a 120-day extension of the discount on tariffs for 'green ships', vessels that significantly reduce pollutant emissions. This initiative, implemented by the Port Authority of Santos (APS), provides a discount of up to 15% on tariffs for ships that meet specific environmental criteria, which are evaluated based on their scores in the Environmental Ship Index developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Since the inception of this measure in 2023, the APS reports that approximately R$ 40.6 million has been discounted for ships and terminals that adhere to these environmental practices. The tariff reduction applies to the use of waterway access infrastructures, calculated based on the gross tonnage of the vessels, thereby promoting incentives for both existing and new sustainable shipping operations.

This extension reflects a broader commitment to align with global environmental standards and to encourage the transition towards more sustainable shipping methods. By incentivizing the adoption of eco-friendly practices, the APS aims to enhance maritime operations that contribute positively to environmental sustainability, making Santos a more attractive port for environmentally conscious shipping companies.
