Captain of Ports details investigation into ship collision with barges in Santos

The investigation into a collision between a container ship and two barges in the Port of Santos, Brazil, is underway, spearheaded by the local Captaincy of Ports, focusing on various testimonial and documentary evidence.

The Captaincy of Ports in SΓ£o Paulo (CPSP) has initiated an investigation into the causes of a collision that occurred between a container ship and two barges in the Santos port channel. Captain Leandro Gomes Mendes stated that they are currently examining eyewitness accounts, forensic evidence, and documentation to determine what led to the accident. The incident took place on the night of Monday, 16th, as the container ship was exiting the canal heading to the anchorage area due to a lack of docking space.

During the collision, four crew members jumped into the sea just moments before the impact, but thankfully, no injuries were reported. Eyewitness Edna BasΓlio captured video footage of the collision that revealed the barges FB-15 and FB-14 were empty of vehicles or passengers at the time. The barges were being towed by FB-15, which had remained temporarily out of operation. This footage has become crucial in the investigation as authorities aim to piece together the sequence of events preceding the collision.

Despite public eagerness for answers regarding the circumstances of the accident, Captain Mendes emphasized the necessity of conducting a thorough investigation to ensure accurate findings. The results of this inquiry will be critical not only for understanding what went wrong but also for preventing future incidents in Brazil's busy shipping routes. As maritime traffic continues to rise, ensuring the safety and efficiency of port operations remains a top priority for the authorities overseeing these waterways.
