Port of Santos prepares auctions for up to 30 new terminals and may gain Export Processing Zone
The Santos Port Authority plans to auction off new areas for 20 to 30 terminals and potentially establish an Export Processing Zone, following a significant expansion of the port's territory.
The Santos Port Authority (APS) is set to initiate the bidding process for new areas at the Port of Santos starting in 2027. This expansion is expected to accommodate between 20 and 30 new terminals, as well as the establishment of a possible Export Processing Zone (ZPE). The port's area has been increased from 9.3 km² to 14.5 km², marking a substantial 56% territorial gain, as stated in a recent decree from the Ministry of Ports and Airports (MPor).
President of the APS, Anderson Pomini, has indicated that there are plans to lease the newly acquired spaces to private enterprises, with an emphasis on modern and technological infrastructure. He noted that calls for proposals will soon be made for the occupation of these areas, specifically targeting terminals that incorporate cutting-edge technologies similar to those found in the most advanced ports worldwide. Pomini highlighted the importance of such advancements in enhancing operational efficiency and meeting future demands.
The expansion and potential establishment of the Export Processing Zone represent significant developments in Brazil's port infrastructure, which could enhance the country’s competitiveness in global trade. Investments in modern terminals are expected to not only boost the local economy but also strengthen Santos as a vital logistics hub in South America.
