Capitania dos Portos investigates collision of container ship with ferries at the Port of Santos
The Port Authority of São Paulo has initiated an investigation into the collision between a container ship and two ferries in Santos, which occurred without injuries.
The Port Authority of São Paulo, known as Capitania dos Portos de São Paulo (CP-SP), has launched an investigation into the causes of a maritime accident involving a collision between the container ship Seaspan Empire and two ferries in the Port of Santos. The incident, which was captured on video, took place on Monday evening, and thankfully did not result in any injuries. At the time of the collision, the two ferries, FB-14 and FB-15, were not operational, raising questions about how such an accident occurred in a crucial transit area between Santos and Guarujá.
During the impact, the crew of the FB-15, consisting of a captain and three sailors, had to leap into the sea as a safety measure. Following the accident, CP-SP has initiated an Administrative Inquiry into Accidents and Navigation Events (IAFN) to thoroughly investigate the incident and to determine any possible accountability among those involved. This step underscores the importance of maritime safety and the need for rigorous procedures to avoid similar accidents in the future.
Additionally, the Santos Port Authority has noted that the Seaspan Empire successfully docked at DP World after the collision. This incident highlights ongoing safety concerns at the busy Port of Santos, which handles a significant amount of maritime traffic and is critical to Brazil's logistics and economy. The investigation's findings could lead to new regulations or safety protocols to ensure the safety of both maritime workers and passengers in the region.
