Influenza claimed three more lives this week

Three individuals in Lithuania, aged between 70 and over 90, died from influenza this past week, all of whom had chronic illnesses and were unvaccinated.

This week, Lithuania reported three additional fatalities due to influenza, specifically among individuals in the age groups of 70-79, 80-89, and those over 90. All of the deceased had pre-existing chronic conditions and were not vaccinated against the virus. The increasing number of influenza cases highlights the ongoing health challenge posed by both the virus and the prevalent chronic diseases among the elderly population.

In addition to the influenza deaths, two more individuals succumbed to COVID-19. These individuals were also in the older age brackets, specifically 80-89 and over 90. Like their influenza counterparts, both had chronic illnesses and were unvaccinated. The concurrent rise in influenza and COVID-19 cases underlines the critical importance of vaccination, particularly for vulnerable populations who are at higher risk for severe complications.

During the past week, Lithuania reported 66 hospitalizations due to influenza and 34 due to COVID-19, with seven of the affected individuals receiving intensive care. The report indicates the lowest incidence rates of illness in TauragΔ— County and the highest in Vilnius County, with no municipality reaching epidemic levels of infection. The health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing the need for vaccination and preventive measures to reduce the impact of these illnesses on public health.
