NVSC: 10 people died from the flu last week

Last week in Lithuania, 10 individuals died from the flu, with a significant number of hospitalizations reported.

According to the National Public Health Surveillance Laboratory (NVSC) in Lithuania, last week saw 10 reported deaths due to influenza, alongside 212 hospital admissions attributed to the flu. Of the hospitalized, 37 were admitted for COVID-19, with 13 individuals requiring intensive care for severe cases of these diseases. Notably, no deaths related to COVID-19 were recorded during the same period. This data highlights the continuing impact that influenza and respiratory infections are having in the region, especially among vulnerable populations.

The deceased ranged in age from 50 to over 90 years, many having underlying chronic health conditions. Notably, a majority (7 out of 10) of the deceased were unvaccinated, while 2 had been vaccinated, and 1 individual's vaccination status remains unknown. This information underscores the importance of vaccination and health precautions, especially in older demographics and those with pre-existing health issues, as they are at higher risk of serious complications from influenza.

With flu rates continuing to climb—indicating a spike from 1280.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants to 1459.8 cases per 100,000—the NVSC is advising the public to maintain personal hygiene, practice cough and sneeze etiquette, and consider vaccination to mitigate the ongoing health risks posed by respiratory illnesses this season.
