NVSC: Influenza killed 13 people last week, and another 301 were hospitalized
Last week, influenza caused 13 deaths in Lithuania, with a significant number of hospitalized cases reported, while the overall incidence of respiratory illnesses continued to rise.
The Lithuanian National Public Health Center (NVSC) reported that last week, influenza resulted in 13 fatalities, predominantly among individuals aged 80 to 89, and three deaths each in several other age groups. All deceased had pre-existing chronic health conditions, and 10 out of the 13 were unvaccinated. Additionally, two individuals died from coronavirus-related complications, also within the elderly demographic, in a context of rising respiratory infections across the nation.
Influenza and respiratory infection cases show a concerning trend, with overall rates dropping slightly to 1280 cases per 100,000 residents. While the indicator has seen a recent decline, the NVSC highlights that 11 municipalities exceeded the threshold of 1,500 cases per 100,000, officially classifying them as experiencing an epidemic level of illness. Moreover, the lowest rates of illness were reported in the PanevΔΕΎys County, while the Vilnius County recorded the highest.
As Lithuania confronts this public health challenge, the rise in both influenza and COVID-19 cases underscores the importance of vaccination and preventive health measures, particularly for vulnerable populations. Public health authorities are expected to emphasize vaccination drives and health awareness campaigns in light of the escalating infection rates.
