No illegal migrants have been recorded on the border with Belarus for ten consecutive nights
Lithuania has not recorded any illegal migrants at its border with Belarus for ten nights straight, reflecting a continuing trend in border security management.
Lithuanian border authorities have reported that for the past ten nights, there have been no illegal migrants attempting to cross from Belarus into Lithuania. Similarly, Latvia and Poland have also reported no incidents of illegal border crossings over the past weekend. This is a significant drop from previous years, especially considering that in 2021, there was a marked increase in the number of migrants attempting to enter Lithuania from Belarus, which Western nations attributed to deliberate actions by the Belarusian government to exacerbate migration flows towards the EU.
So far this year, Lithuanian authorities have rejected entry to 37 migrants trying to cross illegally. This stands in stark contrast to last year, where the number of illegal border crossing attempts exceeded 1,600. The decline in illegal border crossings is seen as a success for border security measures put in place by the Lithuanian government in response to the crisis that began in 2021, highlighting the impact of enhanced border controls and increased cooperation with neighboring countries.
The situation at the border has implications not only for Lithuania but also for broader EU migration policy and relations with Belarus. The decrease in illegal crossings may signal a more effective management of migration flows, but it also emphasizes the need for ongoing vigilance and cooperation among EU member states to address challenges related to border security and human trafficking that persist in the region.
