New speed limits implemented in Ķīpsala and other parts of Riga
New speed limits of 30 km/h will be introduced in various neighborhoods of Riga, including Ķīpsala, to enhance traffic safety.
Starting Monday, March 9, new speed limits will be enforced in several neighborhoods of Riga, including Ķīpsala, Imanta, Ziepniekkalns, and Šķirotava, where certain streets will have a maximum speed of 30 kilometers per hour. The Riga City Council's External Communications Department reported that this change is essential for improving traffic safety and adjusting driving speeds to the existing street infrastructure.
The entire Ķīpsala area is set to become a speed limit zone of 30 km/h, except for streets already designated as residential zones, which require drivers to slow down even further. This decision takes into account the narrow street profiles and the high volume of bicycle and pedestrian traffic in the area. Reducing speed limits is seen as an important strategy to decrease accidents and enhance overall safety within urban environments.
Additionally, the maximum allowed speed will also be reduced on Rājumsila Street, specifically between Krustpils Street and Dzirkaļu Street, in sections where sidewalks are not constructed. This measure aims to promote safer traffic conditions and ensure that driving speeds align with the existing street environment, thus fostering a more secure atmosphere for both drivers and pedestrians alike.
