Speed limits introduced on several streets in Riga

New speed limits of 30 km/h will be implemented in various neighborhoods of Riga starting from March 9 to enhance traffic safety.

Starting March 9, new speed limits of 30 kilometers per hour will be introduced in several neighborhoods of Riga, including Ķīpsala, Imanta, Ziepniekkalns, and Šķirotava. According to the External Communications Department of the Riga City Council, these restrictions aim to improve traffic safety and adapt speed limits to the existing street infrastructure. In the Ķīpsala area, the entire neighborhood will be designated as a 30 km/h zone, except for streets already classified as residential zones, where even lower speeds will be required. The decision to implement these speed limits was influenced by factors such as narrow street profiles, high bicycle traffic, and pedestrian flows. Additionally, specific segments of streets lacking sidewalks, particularly on Rājumsila Street between Krustpils Street and Dzirkaļu Street, will see a reduction in the maximum allowed speed to ensure the safety of all road users. The city council emphasizes that these changes are necessary to create a safer traffic environment and ensure that driving speeds match the characteristics of the urban infrastructure in place. This traffic regulation initiative exemplifies Riga's ongoing efforts to promote safer street environments and enhance the overall safety for pedestrians and cyclists. Such measures are increasingly essential in urban settings where mixed traffic conditions prevail, aiming for a harmonious coexistence of different types of road users while ensuring that infrastructural limitations do not lead to safety hazards.
