Learn about the key changes in the Guayasamín Tunnel starting March 9

Starting March 9, significant traffic modifications will be implemented in the Guayasamín Tunnel in Quito to improve flow.

As of March 9, the Metropolitan Transit Agency (AMT) in Quito will implement changes to the traffic patterns in the central lane of the Guayasamín Tunnel. These modifications aim to alleviate traffic congestion that occurs when the contraflow system ends at 08:30, which previously caused conflicts among drivers due to the reduction of two lanes to one. This move is a response to citizen requests for improved mobility in the area.

Washington Martínez, the director of the municipal agency, confirmed that the changes will facilitate smoother traffic flow, especially during peak hours. The new schedule will allow traffic to flow from the valley to Quito from 06:30 to 12:00, while the reverse direction, from Quito to the valley, will be in effect from 12:00 to 20:00. This new arrangement is intended to enhance safety and reduce delays for commuters navigating the busy tunnel.

The adjustments not only align with public demand but also reflect an ongoing commitment by local authorities to address transportation challenges in the region. As these changes take effect, the AMT will monitor the traffic situation to evaluate the effectiveness of the new system and make further adjustments as necessary to optimize vehicle flow.
