No illegal migrants recorded on the border with Belarus
Border guards in Latvia and Poland did not turn back any migrants recently, with Lithuania having turned away 37 illegal migrants this year.
According to reports, border guards from Latvia reported no illegal migrants attempting to enter their territory on Friday, while Polish authorities stated the same for Thursday. This comes as Lithuania has also noted a significant decrease in attempts to cross its border illegally. The last incident recorded by Lithuanian authorities was on February 26, when two migrants attempting to cross the border illegally were denied entry. In total, Lithuania has turned away 37 illegal migrants in 2023, a sharp contrast compared to the previous years' higher figures.
The surge in illegal migration from Belarus to neighboring Eastern European countries began in 2021, with Western nations accusing the Minsk regime of orchestrating the influx as a hybrid warfare tactic against the EU. The situation has prompted these countries to strengthen their border security measures to combat illegal entries, reflecting ongoing tensions between the EU and Belarus. Last year alone, there were over 1,600 attempts to illegally enter Lithuania from Belarus, compared to just over a thousand two years prior.
This trend in migration highlights the broader geopolitical ramifications of the Belarus-EU conflict, particularly how it has affected the stability of the border areas. As border guards manage this delicate balance of security and humanitarian concerns, the international community remains watchful of Belarus' actions, which could further escalate regional tensions.
