No illegal migrants recorded at the border with Belarus
Latvian border officials did not turn away any illegal migrants attempting to cross their border, while Polish officials turned away 11 migrant attempts, and Lithuania had nine migrants turned away on Friday after a month hiatus.
Latvian border officials reported that on Saturday, they did not turn away any illegal migrants trying to cross their borders. This indicates a potential shift in the trends of illegal migration in the Baltics, reflecting current control measures at borders shared with Belarus. Meanwhile, Polish officials reported turning away 11 migrants attempting to enter Poland illegally the day before, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by border authorities in the region.
In Lithuania, after a month without such incidents, nine migrants were denied entry on Friday. This year's record shows that a total of 23 illegal migrants have not been permitted into the country so far. Last year alone, there were over 1,600 attempts to illegally enter Lithuania from Belarus, demonstrating a significant ongoing issue concerning border security and illegal migration in the region.
The surge in migrant crossings from Belarus to Eastern EU members began in 2021 and is attributed to the actions of the Minsk regime, which Western nations have accused of orchestrating these migration flows as a form of political pressure and retaliation. The persistence of such migration attempts remains a concern for national security and international relations in the area, indicating the necessity for continued vigilance and responsive measures at the borders.
