No illegal migrants recorded at the border with Belarus

According to reports, Latvia and Poland did not turn back any illegal migrants attempting to cross their borders recently, with Lithuania admitting only two migrants this year.

Recent reports reveal that border officials from Latvia and Poland have not encountered any illegal migrants attempting to cross their borders with Belarus in recent days. Specifically, on Wednesday, Latvian border guards reported no such incidents, while Polish guards confirmed the same on Tuesday. In contrast, Lithuania only turned away two illegal migrants this past Monday after a lengthy break of 26 days without such occurrences. Notably, this year Lithuania has recorded a total of 14 illegal migrants being denied entry, which is significantly lower than previous years.

The migrant influx from Belarus into eastern EU member states has been a persistent issue since 2021, with Western nations accusing the Belarusian government of orchestrating these migration flows. Last year, there were over 1.6 thousand attempts to illegally enter Lithuania from Belarus, while the total for the year before reached 1002. The situation has triggered a broader discussion on border security and the methods employed by the Belarusian regime, which is believed to be using migrants as a tool for political leverage against the EU.

This latest report not only highlights a temporary lull in illegal crossings but also underscores the ongoing challenges EU nations face regarding border security amidst geopolitical tensions. The decline in attempted crossings may suggest a shift in dynamics at the border, raising questions about the effectiveness of current border control measures and the potential response required from the EU and its member states to safeguard their borders against future challenges.
