Illegal migrants not recorded at the border with Belarus
Latvian and Polish border guards have reported no illegal migrants attempting to cross the border recently, with Lithuania seeing a total of 37 illegal migrants denied entry this year.
Border agencies from Latvia and Poland reported on their recent operations concerning illegal migration from Belarus, revealing that no illegal migrants were turned back on specific days this week. This follows a broader trend where only two migrants were denied entry into Lithuania since late February, indicating a significant decrease in attempts this year compared to earlier years.
In total, Lithuania has denied entry to 37 illegal migrants in 2023, a notable drop from the over 1,600 attempts recorded last year, reflecting a significant decline in illegal border crossings. The ongoing situation can be traced back to a surge in migration attempts in 2021 when many migrants attempted to enter the EU from Belarus, which was largely blamed on the orchestrations of the Belarusian regime under President Alexander Lukashenko.
This reduction in migrant attempts may hint at changing tactics or tightening security measures at borders, but it also raises concerns about the ongoing humanitarian situation in the region, as the geopolitical tensions between EU nations and Belarus continue to unfold. The implications of this situation remain significant for both local and international policies on migration and border control.
