The show ‘Death and Life of the Amazonian,’ presented by the Teatro Iurupari, will take place from March 6 to 8 in Santarém, Brazil, and is free for attendees 12 years and older.
The Teatro Iurupari of the Federal University of Western Pará (Ufopa) is launching a new season of its acclaimed play ‘Death and Life of the Amazonian’ in Santarém, Brazil, starting March 6 and running through March 8. This year's presentation will occur at the Wilson Fonseca auditorium and is part of a longstanding project that celebrates its 11th anniversary in 2026. Funded through the National Policy Aldir Blanc of 2025, the project offers free access to the public aged 12 and up and includes sign language accessibility.
Based on João Cabral de Melo Neto's classic work ‘Death and Life Severina,’ the play depicts the migration journey of the Raimundos, who travel from the lower regions of Serra Grande to Santarém, utilizing the Curuá-Una highway as their route. This artistic interpretation not only highlights the struggles of migration but also engages with broader themes of identity and the socio-economic context of the Amazon region. It aims to reflect the realities faced by many in rural Brazil and celebrates the resilience of its people.
By providing this artistic experience to the locals free of charge, the Teatro Iurupari reinforces its commitment to cultural education and accessibility. The integration of sign language into the presentations demonstrates a focus on inclusivity, making the arts accessible to a broader audience. Such initiatives are vital in the promotion of local culture and addressing significant regional issues within the context of a rich historical narrative.
