High school students have decided: the most popular exams are becoming clear
This year, there is a noticeable increase in Lithuanian high school students opting for more advanced levels in state graduation exams, particularly in mathematics and natural sciences.
In Lithuania, the upcoming national graduation exams have revealed a trend among high school students toward challenging academic options. This year’s main exam session will feature 39 subjects, with another 38 available during a retake session, indicating that students can freely choose their exam subjects. The head of the National Education Agency, Simonas Šabanovas, noted an increase in the number of students opting for the expanded course of the Lithuanian language and literature exam, as well as a rise in mathematics and natural sciences subjects, suggesting that students are increasingly willing to take on higher academic challenges.
The data shows significant growth in the participation of students taking the mathematics VBE (state graduation exam's first part) this year, with 27,883 students registered compared to 24,039 last year. Among them, the number of students choosing the extended (A) mathematics course rose dramatically from 14,272 in 2025 to 16,144. Additionally, 11,739 students have opted for the general (B) mathematics exam, reflecting a broader interest in embracing more complex academic material in preparation for their future education.
These trends highlight a shift in the educational landscape of Lithuania, as high school students appear more confident in their abilities to tackle rigorous subject matter. Increased choices in natural sciences exams further underscore a growing interest in STEM fields among the youth, which may have implications for higher education enrollment and future workforce development in the country.
