Overflights across Finland - here’s the reason

The Finnish Air Force is celebrating its 108th anniversary with military flyovers in various cities such as Jyväskylä, Vaasa, and Rovaniemi.

On Friday, the Finnish Air Force commemorates its 108th anniversary with celebratory flyovers taking place in several locations across Finland including Jyväskylä, Vaasa, and Rovaniemi. These flyovers feature different aircraft types: the Hawk jet trainers will perform in Jyväskylä and Vaasa, while an F/A-18 Hornet will be the aircraft for the display over Rovaniemi.

The main festivities are set to take place in Tikkakoski, where the celebrations will commence with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Pilots' Statue at 12:30 PM. To ensure safety and accessibility for the event, Rykmentintie will be closed to traffic in the vicinity from 12:20 PM to 1:00 PM. The wreath will be laid by Major General Timo Herranen, the commander of the Finnish Air Force, alongside a representative of the personnel, with the Luonetjärvi Military Home Association also contributing floral arrangements.

Additionally, in Vaasa, a wreath-laying by the Air Force Academy is scheduled at the Kotka statue at 1:00 PM, commemorating the arrival of the first aircraft ever in Finland, the Thulin Typ D reconnaissance aircraft, which was gifted by Swedish Count Eric von Rosen. This event holds historical significance, marking the 6th of March, 1918, as the date of the ceremonial flight from Umeå to Vaasa, which established the date as the anniversary of the Finnish Air Force.
