This week the sky over half of Finland will rumble – Here's what it's about
The Finnish Air Force warns of noise and bright light phenomena due to an exercise conducted by the Karelian Air Command this week.
This week, the Finnish Air Force is conducting a significant exercise known as Vihuri 26, which will result in loud noises and visible light phenomena across much of Finland. The exercise involves the use of Hornet multirole fighters, which will be actively training in the airspace between Rovaniemi and Tampere during the week, specifically from early morning until midnight. The purpose of this exercise is part of routine training for the air force, emphasizing operational readiness.
The Vihuri 26 exercise commenced on Monday and is set to run through Friday, February 27. The participating Squadron 31 will conduct flights in various training programs both day and night. This training is essential for maintaining the skills of the pilots and ensuring that the aircraft are ready for operational scenarios. The flights began at 9:30 AM on Monday and are scheduled to conclude by 3:00 PM on Friday.
The fighter jets are operationally based out of Rissala and Pirkkala and will cover a vast area across Finland. Their designated flight path includes routes demarcated from north to south (Rovaniemi to Tampere) and east to west (Kuusamo to Savonlinna and Tampere to Oulu). Residents in affected areas should be aware of increased noise levels and possible bright lights during this week-long exercise, as an important aspect of air defense readiness in Finland is underlined.
