Insurance companies: we will reimburse the foreign ministry's €2,300 repatriation flight from the Middle East

Insurance companies OP-Pohjola and If announced that they will reimburse clients stranded in the Middle East for a costly repatriation flight organized by the Foreign Ministry.

Insurance companies OP-Pohjola and If have informed Yle that they are willing to cover the expenses for stranded customers needing repatriation flights from the Middle East, which can be quite expensive. The Finnish Foreign Ministry is planning to arrange a flight from Oman on Sunday to bring Finnish citizens back, with a ticket cost of approximately €2,300 per passenger. Around 600 people have expressed interest in the flight, although there are only 155–160 spots available, with priority being given to families with children and those in difficult situations.

Given the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, the repatriation efforts have been made possible under the crisis cover of travel insurance, according to OP-Pohjola. They noted that any repatriation flights from Dubai or Doha back to Finland would also be considered a compensable situation under the crisis drill of their travel insurance policies. If echoed this sentiment, stating that they would reimburse costs incurred if an airline or tour operator fails to do so, including those associated with the Foreign Ministry's organized flight.

The situation highlights the difficulties faced by Finnish citizens abroad amid the crisis in the Middle East, as they scramble to return home safely. With limited availability on flights and high costs associated with repatriation, both the government and private insurance companies are stepping in to assist those in distress, reflecting a coordinated effort to ensure the welfare of Finnish nationals caught in international crises.
