Metrolinx looking to ‘build public trust’ after rocky launch for Finch West LRT
Metrolinx is aiming to regain public trust following issues with the launch of the Finch West LRT, which left riders frustrated due to service disruptions.
Metrolinx, Ontario's transit planning agency, is focusing on rebuilding public trust after the challenging launch of the Finch West Light Rail Transit (LRT) system. This new transit line, which opened in December 2022, was the first significant addition to Toronto's transit network in over a year. However, the rollout faced numerous difficulties, including major service disruptions that frustrated passengers and cast doubt on the reliability of the new system.
The Finch West LRT spans 10 kilometers and includes 18 stops, designed to provide high-speed rail services to replace the existing bus network. Unfortunately, the system's initial performance was hindered by harsh winter conditions that compromised its switching systems. During one week, the service availability plummeted to just 88 percent, and normally reliable services were replaced by shuttle buses, causing significant inconvenience to commuters.
In an interview, Metrolinx CEO Michael Lindsay openly acknowledged the agency's mistakes, particularly in failing to conduct more stringent testing of critical systems. He admitted that there was a lack of clear communication about the operational expectations for riders. Moving forward, Metrolinx is committed to addressing these challenges and improving their communication strategies to restore public confidence in the transit system.
