Santos starts pilot project with ecological grates to modernize drainage network
The city of Santos in Brazil is launching a pilot project to install eco-friendly grates in its drainage system as part of an initiative for sustainable modernization.
The city of Santos, located in São Paulo's coastal region, has embarked on a pilot project to modernize its drainage network by installing ecological grates. These innovative grates are made from high-durability recycled plastic and can support over 30 tons, highlighting their robust design. The initiative is expected to install 20 units by the end of the semester, with 10 units scheduled to be installed by the end of March in neighborhoods such as Marapé, Embaré, and Ponta da Praia.
One of the significant advantages of this new system is the quick installation process, which minimizes disruptions to roadways and simplifies maintenance activities. This efficient design aims to optimize regular cleaning efforts for the drainage system, ensuring improved operational effectiveness. Additionally, the grates are engineered without commercial resale value, a feature that is intended to reduce the likelihood of theft, a common issue with traditional drainage systems.
This pilot project not only showcases Santos' commitment to sustainability and innovation but also sets a precedent for other cities facing similar urban drainage challenges. By investing in durable and environmentally friendly infrastructure, Santos aims to enhance public safety and environmental health, making the city more resilient to heavy rainfall and potential flooding.
