Santos launches international bidding of R$ 236.9 million to build 1,024 housing units

The city of Santos in Brazil has announced an international bidding process for the construction of over 1,000 housing units aimed at relocating families affected by drainage improvements.

On May 20, the city government of Santos, located on the São Paulo coast, announced the opening of an international bidding process targeting foreign companies for the construction of 1,024 housing units and 18 commercial spaces in the Areia Branca neighborhood. The initiative, run by the Companhia de Habitação da Baixada Santista (Cohab-ST), represents a significant investment of R$ 236,943,644.28, aiming to address housing needs in conjunction with infrastructure improvements in the area.

The successful bidder will have 33 months to complete the project, which will take place on a 12,815.75 m² site on Rua César Augusto de Castro Rios, known locally as Estradão. This development is part of a broader initiative, with the city government indicating that the new homes are intended to assist families who will be displaced due to macro-drainage works tied to the Santos Mais Program, which focuses on improving the city's infrastructure and living conditions.

The international bidding process is seen as a strategic move to attract innovative technologies and methodologies to the construction project, underscoring Santos' commitment to modernizing its approach to urban development. The city's engagement with foreign companies indicates an openness to diverse construction practices that could enhance the quality and efficiency of housing solutions, reflecting a priority on both immediate responsiveness to housing needs and long-term urban planning goals.
