Latvian Realism Literature Researchers: This is the Right Time to Explore Our Past Trauma

Researchers in Latvia are reinterpreting literary realism from the 19th to the 21st centuries to understand its implications for identity and social change.

A scientific project titled "Recovering Latvian Realism: Literary Innovations as a Quest for Identity" features seven literary scholars who are focusing on a new interpretation of Latvian literary realism spanning from the 19th to the 21st century. The project aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the significance of realism representation and questions whether its innovative aspects reveal literature's potential to drive social change and a deeper understanding of values. This exploration happens at a crucial historical moment in Latvia's sociocultural narrative, particularly as the country reflects on its history and the traumas associated with it.

Ilze Jansone, one of the researchers involved, has expressed her eagerness to delve into the reasons behind the interest in Latvian realism. Another researcher, Artis Ostups, admits that prior to this project, he had little interest in realism, primarily focusing on modernism and contemporary literature. His newfound engagement with realism has sparked an understanding that this literary style can coexist with others, suggesting a more dynamic and interconnected approach to literary studies in Latvia.
