Latvian Realism Researchers: This is the Right Time to Explore Our Past Trauma

A group of seven literary scholars in Latvia is undertaking a project to explore new interpretations of Latvian literary realism from the 19th to the 21st century.

In the scientific project titled "Recovering Latvian Realism: Literary Innovations as Searches for Identity," seven literary scholars are focusing on a fresh interpretation of Latvian literary realism. This project spans works from the 19th to the 21st century and aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the significance of realism's representations. It also poses questions regarding whether the innovative aspects of realism reveal literature's potential to stimulate social change and deepen the understanding of values.

One of the scholars, Ilze Jansone, engages in a dialogue with colleague Artis Ostups about the reasons behind their interest in Latvian realism. Ostups admits that prior to joining the project, he had little interest in realism, largely because his research had always been linked to what is typically considered its opposite—modernism and contemporary literature. As he delved further into realism for the project, he began to appreciate its coexistence with other styles in literary works.

The project's exploration has broad implications for understanding how Latvian literature reflects cultural and historical contexts. The insights gained from this research may contribute to discussions on national identity, the role of literature in societal changes, and the ways in which past traumas are processed and integrated into contemporary narratives, making this a significant undertaking not just for literature but for the Latvian community's cultural discourse as a whole.
