Menopause symptoms cause a loss of R$ 2 billion per year to the Brazilian economy

Economic productivity losses due to work absences from menopause symptoms in Brazil amount to over R$ 2 billion annually, as reported by a study from the Instituto Esfera de Estudos e Inovação.

A recent study from the Instituto Esfera de Estudos e Inovação reveals that Brazilian women are experiencing significant economic productivity losses, estimated at over R$ 2 billion per year, due to work absences triggered by menopause symptoms. This research was led by experts, including Clarita Costa Maia, a legal scholar, and Fabiane Berta, a doctor and menopause researcher. The study highlights that around 1.9 million Brazilian women lose workdays each year because of debilitating symptoms associated with menopause, which underscores the widespread impact of this issue in the workforce.

The researchers emphasize that these economic and labor consequences arise from a lack of structured responses to support women undergoing menopause. With nearly 29 million women in Brazil currently experiencing menopause or post-menopause, there is an urgent need for health and workplace policies to address this demographic's specific challenges. This demographic shift is often overlooked, leading to inadequate support systems for affected women in the workplace, which can further exacerbate economic losses.

As discussions about women’s health become more prominent, this study advocates for heightened awareness and action regarding menopausal symptoms and their ramifications on the economy. Addressing these issues could not only mitigate productivity losses but also improve overall workplace inclusivity and well-being for women at this stage of life.
