Adolescents and young people aged 15 to 19 can receive free HPV vaccinations in Santo Antônio de Jesus, Brazil, with availability across all health units in the municipality.

In Santo Antônio de Jesus, located in the interior of Bahia, free HPV vaccinations are being offered to adolescents and young people between the ages of 15 and 19. HPV, or human papillomavirus, is responsible for 99% of cervical cancer cases, which is the third most common cancer among women in Brazil when excluding non-melanoma skin tumors. Medical authorities recognize that HPV is now a preventable disease through vaccination, screening, and treatment of precancerous lesions. Furthermore, the protective effects of vaccination also extend to other cancers, including those of the penis, anus, oropharynx, vagina, and vulva, highlighting the importance of the initiative in public health.

Previously, the HPV vaccine has been provided free of charge by Brazil's Unified Health System (SUS) for girls and boys aged 9 to 14. The Ministry of Health has extended its vaccination strategy to include older adolescents in a bid to enhance community health outcomes and tackle HPV-related cancers effectively. This initiative underscores Brazil's commitment to combating cancer and improving public health through preventive measures and widespread vaccination programs.
