Santos surpasses Brazil's average and becomes a reference in HPV vaccination
The city of Santos has exceeded Brazil's average HPV vaccination coverage, achieving 98.31% coverage among 9 to 14-year-olds in 2023.
The city of Santos, located in SΓ£o Paulo's coastal region, has achieved remarkable success in HPV vaccination, surpassing the national average. According to the municipal health department, 98.31% of children and adolescents aged 9 to 14 received the HPV vaccine in 2023, significantly exceeding the National Immunization Program's target of 90% coverage. This successful initiative has positioned Santos as a benchmark for other regions in Brazil, with health experts advocating for the replication of such strategies across the country.
Renato Kfouri, a pediatric infectious disease specialist and vice president of the Brazilian Society of Immunizations (SBIm), emphasized the importance of sharing these success stories with the wider community. He noted that preliminary data showed equal success in both boys and girls, with 89.4% of girls and 82.7% of boys vaccinated in 2025 compared to national figures of 82% and 67%, respectively. Kfouri's insights highlight that local municipalities can play a pivotal role in public health by implementing effective vaccination strategies that lead to higher rates of immunization.
Furthermore, this notable achievement has broader implications for public health policy in Brazil. By demonstrating high vaccination rates, Santos provides a model that not only focuses on health outcomes but also emphasizes the importance of vaccinations in preventing diseases. Health officials believe that such exemplary practices should be communicated and shared nationwide, aiming to encourage other cities to adopt similar approaches and ultimately improve the overall health landscape in Brazil.
