Niger laments inadequate data for women’s health research

The Niger State Government in Nigeria has called for improved data collection to support women's health research.

The Niger State Government has expressed concern over the lack of adequate data to support research into health issues affecting women. The Health Commissioner, Murtala Bagana, emphasized the need for health agencies and the federal government to allocate resources and funding to create a robust database, which is essential for enhancing research into women's health conditions, particularly those impacting the black woman. This call for action coincided with a stakeholders' event focused on prioritizing women's menstrual and reproductive health.

Commissioner Bagana pointed out the historical neglect of women's health issues by policymakers and government institutions, highlighting that this has hindered progress in addressing critical health challenges faced by women in the state. He underscored that research conducted by the White Ribbon Alliance Nigeria, in collaboration with Youterus Health, would provide valuable insights that could inform policy decisions and improve outcomes for women's health.

The Niger State Government's initiative reflects a growing recognition of the importance of evidence-based research in shaping health policies. By advocating for better data collection, the government aims to influence and direct attention towards women's health, which has been overlooked for years. This concerted effort could lead to enhanced healthcare services and better support for women in Niger State as well as potentially set a precedent for similar initiatives in other regions of Nigeria.
