IWD: Nasarawa raises the alarm over rising gender-based violence
On International Women's Day 2026, the Nasarawa State Government expressed alarm over increasing gender-based violence in the state and called for collective action.
On the occasion of International Women's Day 2026, the Nasarawa State Government has raised concerns about the rising instances of gender-based violence within the state. During a press briefing in Lafia, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Humanitarian Services, Hauwa Jugbo, emphasized the need for collective efforts to combat this alarming trend. She underscored that gender-based violence is not merely a women's issue but a societal one that warrants a concerted response from all sectors of society.
The Commissioner further highlighted the theme of this yearβs International Womenβs Day, "Give to Gain," which focuses on the importance of investing in women and girls. This investment, she argued, leads to a multiplier effect of benefits that extend not just to individual women and girls but also to families, communities, and the nation as a whole. By prioritizing gender equity, the state aims to facilitate broader societal progress and sustainable development.
Jugbo reiterated that empowering women is crucial for achieving fairness and justice, framing it as essential for sustainable development within the community. With government initiatives and community engagement, the Nasarawa State Government seeks to address gender-based violence by promoting women's rights and facilitating their advancement, recognizing that a society flourishes when all its members have equal opportunities to thrive.
