Nigeria: IWD - NGO Urges Better Kaduna Health Budget Rollout to Reduce Maternal, Child Deaths

An NGO in Kaduna has called for increased implementation of the state’s health budget to address the high rates of maternal and child mortality.

The Maternal Accountability Mechanism in Kaduna Initiative (KADMAM) is advocating for improved implementation of the 2026 health budget by the Kaduna State Government. In a statement coinciding with International Women's Day, the organization stressed that mere funding for infrastructure and medical equipment is not sufficient; there must also be consistent funding, access to essential medications, skilled health care professionals, and family planning services to effectively combat maternal and child mortality.

KADMAM pointed out that Nigeria continues to face significant public health challenges, particularly regarding maternal health and the deaths of children under five. These issues are exacerbated by inadequate resources and a lack of comprehensive health care strategies. The NGO is urging that the health budget not only be allocated but also effectively utilized to address these urgent health challenges that threaten the lives of women and children.

International Women's Day serves as a critical reminder of the ongoing struggles women face, especially concerning their health. The KADMAM initiative’s call for action highlights the need for a concerted effort from the government and stakeholders to improve health outcomes in Kaduna, ensuring that women and children receive the necessary resources and care to reduce preventable deaths.
