Municipal pharmacies in Piracicaba start offering free HIV self-test; see where to pick up
Municipal pharmacies in Piracicaba, Brazil are now providing free HIV self-testing, following a new initiative from the local health department.
The municipal pharmacies in Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil, have started offering free HIV self-testing, as announced by the Municipal Health Department. Previously, these tests were only available at the Center for Infectious Diseases (Cedic). This initiative is part of the national program 'Prevenção Combinada ao HIV,' aimed at increasing awareness and accessibility to HIV testing among the population.
In the last nine years, there have been 939 reported cases of HIV in Piracicaba, with the highest incidence found among men aged 25 to 59. The provision of these self-tests is intended to enhance testing rates, especially as it allows individuals to test themselves at home using either oral fluid or blood samples. This ease of access is expected to play a crucial role in encouraging more individuals to get tested and to seek necessary care if results are positive.
The availability of free HIV self-testing reflects a broader commitment by health authorities in Brazil to combat the spread of HIV and ensure that individuals can easily access testing without the stigma often associated with visiting health facilities. By pooling resources with the Ministry of Health, this program aims to empower the local population and significantly reduce the number of untested individuals, ultimately leading to better health outcomes within the community.
