After Carnival, Teresina Reinforces Importance of Free HIV and Other STI Tests; See Where to Get Tested
In the aftermath of Carnival, Teresina emphasizes the need for free testing for HIV and other STIs at local health facilities.
After the festive season of Carnival, the Municipal Health Foundation (FMS) in Teresina has stressed the importance of free rapid testing for HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis. This public health initiative is aimed at encouraging the community to utilize the available resources at Basic Health Units (UBSs) and the Testing and Monitoring Center (CTA) located in the city center. The initiative highlights the increased risks associated with sexual activities during Carnival, a time known for heightened social interactions and potential health risks.
In addition to free testing, the FMS has made the Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) medication available at both the CTA and Hospital Natan Portella. PEP is a preventive treatment that can significantly reduce the risk of HIV infection if started within three days following unprotected sexual intercourse. The FMS recommends that individuals who may have engaged in risky behavior during Carnival seek testing and consider PEP treatment if needed, emphasizing the importance of taking prompt action to protect one's health.
Alana Niege, the coordinator of the Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) unit at FMS, has advised that while individuals can choose to be tested at any time, it is best to wait 30 days after the potential exposure for the most accurate result. This guidance is particularly pertinent in light of the increased risks during the Carnival period, wherein the FMS advocates for testing as a responsible health behavior for those engaging in intimate relationships.
